A picnic can be defined simply as a pleasure excursion at which a meal is eaten outdoors, ideally, taking place in a beautiful location. In the 1600’s, a French ‘piquenique’, meant a potluck, each person contributed a dish for all to share. The word translated to English as ‘picnic’ in the mid-1700’s. In approximately 1800 the word picnic made it into the English language, but the picnic still hadn’t made it to America. The outdoor concept of a picnic did not originate in America until the 19th century. Currently, we think of a picnic as a casual meal enjoyed in a beautiful outdoor setting. |
