Every outdoor space can benefit from patio furniture. The difficulty is finding patio dining sets that fit the space and the owner's personality. A person who doesn't enjoy insects and bugs may wish to have furniture that is high off the ground and removed from soil or plants. One who revels in the outdoors may wish to sling a hammock between two trees and enjoy the leaves as they fall.

To begin determining if one needs either extreme or something in the middle, one needs to assess the space available. Some patio dining sets come with ten chairs and a large umbrella. These would not suit well an apartment balcony. More conservative patio dining sets seat four to six. A small space may do better with a small bistro table and pair of chairs. For very confined spaces, one may wish to consider stackable furniture that can be stored out of the way until needed.

Once one has measured the dimension of the space, it is time to determine the style. Patio furniture comes in several different materials. Metal furniture tends to be ornate and weather resistant. One can choose from aluminum or iron in several colors. Wicker used to be a one-season temporary element, but now can be treated to remain light weight and resilient in any weather. Wood patio dining sets may be luscious, heavy pieces which add a feeling of richness and luxury.

Next one must decide on accessories. For those who enjoy their creature comforts, patio furniture can have overstuffed cushions. One can purchase divans and lounges for reclining. Perhaps a cast iron bistro table is just right for a patio corner, but uncomfortable for long stretches of time. Add some pillows for added softness and color. Plants can hang from any rafters or line the railings. A weighted umbrella separate from the dining area can provide shade. Set up tiki torches or floor lamps to enjoy the space after dark to complement your picnic table .

Finally, it is time to consider the underused areas that are often overlooked. On larger patios, a rocking chair might fit in one corner, or a cushioned swing. They can look new with modern materials and patterns, yet still bring the comfort they did in years past. For example, young lovers can share the swing while holding hands or a grandparent can hold a grandchild while telling stories.

Other options include setting up a low table surrounded by pillows or an over-sized ottoman that doubles as a storage bench. Lay out a board game and let the fun begin. Serve barbecue fresh from a nearby grill or lay out lunch at the table. Hosts who enjoy more formal parties may prefer a bar or buffet table separate from the dining area.

Decorating for the outdoors is only limited by one's space and imagination. Modern patio furniture comes in every style, material and color to suit any taste. The patio can become a family-friendly extension of the living room or a quiet retreat for one.
